Dame Joan Sutherland Award 2010

The finals of the Dame Joan Sutherland Award vocal competition were held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran College on Friday June 24, as part of the Noosa Long Weekend celebrations.

We had eight excellent finalists - the judges couldn't put a pin between them.   However, on the night, Rebecca Cassidy, soprano, won the Encouragement Award ($1,000). Kiandra Howarth, soprano, won the Margreta Elkins Award ($4,000). Kang Wang, tenor, won the People's Choice ($500) and Anna Lucy Whitehead, lyric spinto soprano, won the prestigious Dame Joan Sutherland Award ($15,000).

Dame Joan Award Doubles In Size And Talent

The Dame Joan Sutherland Vocal Awards has doubled its entries this year attracting 28 entrants from artists as far afield as Darwin and Western Australia,

Noosa Federation of Arts (NFA) Chairman Meg Lawrence said today. Ms Lawrence said the NFA started the Awards in 1990 and took them National in 2008 to support and encourage classical vocal artists had achieved credibility and notoriety amongst classical singers.

“This is the only Dame Joan Sutherland award in Australia and offers the highest regional financial prizes,” Ms Lawrence said.

“Over the past few years the awards have gained credibility and a reputation of the highest order.”

Ms Lawrence said first place included a prize purse of $15,000 to assist singers with study, travel, coaching and progressing their vocal career.

“It is highly sought after and attracts the highest calibre of talent,” she said.

Critically acclaimed artists return to Noosa

Lipman Harp DuoInternationally renowned Harpists Sebastien and Sayo Lipman will perform an intimate concert in Noosa on Saturday March 13 hosted by Noosa Federation of the Arts (NFA).

Taking place on the rooftop of the Noosa Blue Resort, this unique performance will blend the angelic sound of two harps with the setting sun.

“It will be a truly romantic evening of music. There is something mesmerising about two harps being played in unison,” said Meg Lawrence, NFA Chairman.

Dame Joan Sutherland Award 2010

This year's competition finals will be held at 5pm on Thursday 24th June at Good Shepherd Lutheran Hall, 115 Eumundi Rd, Noosaville.

Auditions will be held from 10am on Sunday 16th May at Opera Queensland Rehearsal Studio (Ground level – entrance next to Conservatorium Cafeteria), Queensland Conservatorium Building, 16 Russell St, South Bank.

Entries close on Friday 23rd April.
